Being Grateful - TOTW - December 26, 2010

As we arrive at the close of another decade, it is an excellent time for reflection. Where have we been and where are we going? There is much to be grateful for.

When you bow to the Shinden, many things may be going through your mind. But one thought that you must have is gratitude, giving thanks to those who have come before us. The Shinden have given us the gift of Karatedo, the way and the path of Karate.

Karate is a LIVING art. It exists only in the minds and bodies of those who practice and teach. So therefore, we must practice and we must teach to keep this art alive. And while doing so, we must be grateful for this incredible gift that we’ve been given. But the most amazing thing is that by GIVING, we GET. Hanshi teaches us that if you want to learn something, teach it to someone else. When we GIVE our thanks, our hearts and minds will be filled with the incredible energy of gratitude.

Today, ask yourself “What would my life be like WITHOUT karate?” Reflect on how you have learned, grown stronger, and gained knowledge and perspective on your path. Think about the people that have taught you and have shown you the way; these individuals are your personal Shinden. Think of those you have helped or taught, for they too are Shinden. Look at their faces, bow down, and be grateful.
