Two Thoughts This Week
"Teach With Humility" &
"If It's Not In The Book ..."

"Teach with Humility." These are Kyoshi's words and what he means by them only he would be able to explain.... But the way I see this quote is that we are all teachers and we are all student's...hence we learn from each other....and we need to be kind to one another as we learn and pass on the art. I would also like to take the time to add that we are practicing a traditional art and it is very important to teach Shorin-Ryu Karate. To quote Kyoshi again,

"If it's not in the red book or the greenbook or Master Nagamine's book or if it isn't in the video then it's not Shorin-Ryu." I think that is pretty clear don't you? I myself have a tendency to have fun with our Art since I work so closely with children age 5 and up....I have learned to make the kata etc. fun and exciting by viewing it from different angles. Examples: Kata with just hands, just feet, eyes closed, or in your imagination (the mind's eye perform oi-tsuski on a line that is the ledge of a building 50 floors up, to work balance....However it's still Shorin-Ryu Karate. Hope this thought is helpful. Arigato, Sensei Judy.
