Master Motobu's karate-do inspired Master Nagamine to develop the yakusoku kumite that we practice. We can see in our yakusoku kumite principles derived by Master Nagamine from his study with Master Motobu. One of these principles is that “The ideal technique, whether it be hand or foot, is one which can provide an effective simultaneous defense and offense.” One basic example of this principle in action in the yakusoku kumite is the defender’s final move in yakusoku sho, which combines blocking and punching effects in one move. The principle is practiced the same way when punches in kata act to block and counter punches from a bunkai attacker.
