Train With Purpose

Grand Master Ankichi Arakaki emphasized to his students that karate originated from man’s instinct for self-preservation.

Grand Master Shoshin Nagamine begins his preface to “The Essence of Okinawan Karate-Do” with a quote from Grand Master Gichin Funakoshi, “Karate ni sente nashi (There is no first attack in karate)”.

Whether training on or off the deck through kata, repetitions of techniques, makiwara or kumite our primary focus should always be on the effectiveness of our movements and the power and spirit we put into each one. We should train as if our life depends on it.
