Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate / Technique of the Week

Technique of the Week (October 10th, 2005)

Onegai-shimasu Hanshi, Kyoshi, Sensei, Sempai and Fellow Deshi,

Hanshi has recently emphasized an important subtlety related to stepping
forward in shizentai dachi. The foot that is in front as the movement
begins does not pivot at the start of the move. Put another way, it does
not "pre-turn." It only turns (45 degrees) after the other foot has started
moving forward.

It should be noted, however, that not all stances follow this pattern. For
example, when stepping straight forward into nekoashi dachi, the foot that
starts in front does "pre-turn" as the other foot steps forward towards its
final position.

Keep stepping forward.

Domo arigato gozaimasu to all.
Emiliano Mazlen
