Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate / Technique of the Week

Technique of the Week (September 19th, 2005)

From Kyoshi David Baker, Shihan
Midtown Karate Dojo, Hombu New York, NY

--------------------------------------------------------------

Theory:
Every technique accelerates through the point of contact.

Underlying physical law:
Newton's Second Law of Physics: force = mass x ACCELERATION*

Method:
1) Overall movement is initiated by a combination of "hip" and, when doing a
hand technique, the muscles moving both the primary hand and those muscles
retracting the second hand into the "pocket."

2) Acceleration of the technique (beyond that of the initiating movement) is
usually accomplished by the torquing of the arm in arm techniques, the
whipping retraction of the foot during kicks, and by the use of gravity if using
downward hip movement.

(* Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity of an object with respect
to time.")
