Kyoshi's Technique of the Week

June 11th , 2017

This weeks technique is submitted by Kyoshi David Baker,
Chief Administrator,
Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate USA

Some upper body principles

1.The elbow must travel, to apply the force initially generated by the lower body. Because, if the elbow remains either still or incorrectly “hinges” to the side without travelling (see graphic below), then no lower body force can be applied to the arm technique.

2. The forearm rotates during every arm technique

(Both elbow travel and forearm rotation can add acceleration

to the force initially generated by the lower body.)

3. Therefore, the force of an arm technique is the amount of body mass applied, multiplied by the speed of a) hip movement, b) elbow travel, and c) forearm rotation
