Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate / Technique of the Week

April 14th, 2013

From Sensei Chris Barnes, Shichi Dan/Denshi

Greetings Hanshi, and All Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate USA Deshi.

As I get older and wiser and realize my attackers are getting younger with more mass and power than me,
that my hammer fist might not do the damage it once could. Ueshiro Shorin Ryu offers me options.
My striking points on my attackers have changed and with that a change has been made for my go to striking techniques.

SHUTO-UCHI or KNIFE - HAND STRIKE

Page 76 of The Essence of OKINAWAN KARATE -DO

Nagamine Sensei shares three of the "Several Ways" this technique can be used.

Chest Knife Hand Strike, which All Deshi do in Fukyugata II

Chest Double Knife Hand found in Kata Chinto

Chest Augmented knife hand strike also found in Kata Chinto

Then there on page 78 is a little gem of a strike: (PHOTO BELOW)
HAITO-UCHI or REVERSE KNIFE HAND STRIKE
which has become my new weapon of choice.
Found in Naihanchi I.
The Ridge Hand or opposite side of the hand is used to strike
an opponents forearm, fist or my go to target The NECK.

This strike allows me to deliver a fatal blow regardless of the size and strength of an opponent
Use Makiwara or Heavy Bag for thousands of repetition.
Using Naihanchi, Cat Stance, or Open Leg Natural Stance.
Circle The Heavy Bag Blasting it with Reverse Knife Hand Strikes
*Also one of the few techniques were it specifically states this is BOTH a strike and a block
*Think About That.
