Basic Techniques Across the Deck

Onegai-shimasu Hanshi, Kyoshi, Sensei, and fellow Deshi,

Based on comments and conversations concerning the recent Black Belt weekend in NY and Black Belt training in FL, I’ve decided to share one of my teaching techniques. Hanshi has been stressing the importance of instructing the basic exercises, to use the Hogen (“Japanese”) terminology, to perform them in the proper order, and to be motivating. These can be difficult to keep straight during a class. My training as a Navy submarine systems instructor taught me that you need to keep your notes close at hand. Easy to do in a class room, not so easy in a Dojo. Constantly referring to the 50th Journal can be disruptive to the flow of training, so I use laminated card size notes. It’s everything that’s in the journal, but condensed. I keep mine nearby while teaching on the deck and refer to it as necessary. Attached are the full page and card size formats.

Domo arigato gozaimasu,
