Technique of the Week (March 10th, 2007)

From Kyoshi David Baker,
Chief Operating Officer
Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate USA

--------------------------------------------------------------

The headbutt is a very powerful technique for close-range fighting. It was Master Ueshiro’s favorite breaking technique and he performed it dozens of times on as many as four cinder blocks at a time.

The point of contact is the hairline of a fully blossomed crown. (Your actual hairline may vary.)

One target is through the nose of your opponent. Surprise is necessary, so do nothing beforehand that might “telegraph” your intentions. However, because the neck is flexible, you can immobilize his head first by grabbing it with both your hands from behind, while facing him, and then increase the power of the technique by drawing his head toward you while driving your head through his nose. But again, not if it might compromise the surprise.
