Warming Up

By Goldenberg Sensei

The goal of training Shorin Ryu karate USA under the direction of Grand Master Ansei Ueshiro is to stay healthy, increase confidence, strength, and the ability to defend yourself should the need arise. Not to get injured!   In order to achieve these goals warming up is extremely important. I will preface this thought by saying that the traditional warm ups at the beginning of class should be sufficient, however everyone is different and therefore have different metabolic rates. It is my recommendation to warm up before class for app. 10 minutes. At the end of this time you should be sweating.  Some good ideas for warming up include;

light stretching

1/2 power kata

push ups

sit ups

SPARRING IS PROBABLY THE WORST EXERCISE TO PERFORM BEFORE BEING WARMED UP.

The reasons for warming up include;

raised oxygen intake

increased circulation

increased nerve transmission

warmed up muscles result in faster and more forceful contraction.

Mentally prepare for the workout by concentrating alone, or working with a partner.  Every training session is precious. so lets train smart and keep healthy.
