December 5, 2022 - Indoor Training at 4 West 43rd St.

Due to dropping temperatures classes this month will be held indoors at 4 West 43rd Street. Save the date of Dec. 21st for our year-end compai on Dec. 21st. Domo arigato gozaimasu to all the Midtown deshi for your tremendous support during this time of transition. Such support takes many forms – opening the dojo, covering classes, bringing in new students, photographing special events, financial backing – all of which confirm the "It takes a whole village" concept in keeping a dojo vibrant and moving forward.

November 13, 2022 - 60th Anniversary Workout

In honor of The Year of the Tiger and 60 years of Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu USA, a "Progressive Workout" was held in Central Park. The class format involved holding different parts of the traditional class at various landmarks, including the Poets’ Walk, Wisteria Pergola, Naumburg Bandshell and Bethesda Fountain Terrace. Three intrepid deshi from the Ueshiro Okinawan Karate Family Dojo joined us to celebrate a perfect autumn day in Manhattan. Domo arigato gozaimasu to Sensei Barb Schaefer, Sempai Anne Burgevin, and Lydia Geiger for their infectious "We can do this!" energy.

As an interim "Thought for the Week" please consider the following: "Courage, President Kennedy knew, requires something more than just the absence of fear. Any fool can be fearless. Courage, true courage, derives from that sense of who we are, what are our best selves, what are our most important commitments, and the belief that we can dig deep and do hard things for the enduring benefit of others."

- Former President Barack Obama, May 8, 2017

May 12 - Weapons Workout

The Ueshiro Midtown and Downtown dojos held their annual Kobudo (weapons) workshop on Sunday, May 7, in the Hombu Dojo and St. Bart's gymnasium.  Seminars were offered in the Bo, Sai, Nunchaku and Tuifa by Kyoshi Michael Mackay, Kyoshi David Baker, Sensei Kevin Reymond and Sempai Bob St. George, respectively.

The event was attended by approximately 22 students ranging from Ni-Kyu to Ku-Dan. Special thanks to those deshi who travelled all the way from Northampton, MA, to train with us: Sensei Nancy Owen and Sempai(s) Michaele Mastroiannoi, Bob St. George and Singwen Mientka. The afternoon concluded with demonstrations of weapons kata from each group, followed by a brief open discussion about each weapon's unique capabilities.

After the workout many participants headed down to Vincent's in Little Italy (a favorite restaurant of Master Ueshiro and Hanshi Scaglione in the "old days") for much revelry.

May 10 - On Etiquette

Just a brief reminder re: student/teacher etiquette: The Dojo release form states,

"I understand I have the right and responsibility to excuse myself from any exercise I believe may be harmful to me. I further understand that all instructors and students have a responsibility to train and conduct themselves in a manner that maintains the safety and welfare of all participants."

As a matter of etiquette, if you're unable or unwilling to perform an exercise, politely inform the instructor or partner you're "Working around an injury." Conversely, if someone tells you they're "Working around an injury," forego further corrections or (even better) explore workarounds after class.

Do not let ego or pride disrupt the flow of the class or your training goals. Even if you don't agree with a specific correction, exercise or demonstration, just do the best you can (and practice the art of making lemonade out of lemons) or politely excuse yourself as described above.

May 9 - Comments from Hanshi

Hanshi has been sharing his thoughts with the Executive Committee about moving the USRKUSA organization forward and preparing for the 60th Anniversary (the Year of the Tiger, which is also his birth year!) I'd like to pass along some of his observations and recommendations:

"Greetings Kyoshi, Sensei and all Deshi of Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu USA:

It is now three months since the 55th Anniversary celebration in Florida. I encourage Deshi of ALL levels to take an inventory of your respective activities in meeting the responsibilities of your rank. It need not be written down, only tallied as a list in your mind's eye -- a spot check inventory -- so you are aware of what is obvious to everyone around you. Specifically:

* If you're a Sensei: What is the total number of students at each rank promoted under you from Ro-Kyu through Black Belt? How many of these occurred in the last ten years? In the last five years? In the past twelve months?

* If you're a Sho-Dan or Ni-Dan: Same questions.

* If you're current rank is between Yon-Kyu and Ik-Kyu: Do you arrive early to help set up the dojo? Assist beginners before class? Work with your training partner before class? Conduct classes? Stay after class to answer or ask questions and clean up? Assist with closing the dojo?

In sum: Are you earning your rank today? It is NOT too late! The future begins NOW and it lasts forever. There are many karate dojo and clubs waiting to be opened by YOU, one day. Your actions today (for better or worse) define what it means to be a green belt, or brown belt or black belt, in your own eyes and to the world at large.

April 25 - Tip Test

The April tip test was held on Tuesday, April 25, at the Midtown Dojo. Congratulations to Lydia Roman on her promotion to Ro-Kyu. Domo arigato as well to Kyoshi Baker and all the advanced students who came down to lend support, not just during the formal test but during the katathons before and after.

The Midtown Dojo’s end-of-year workout and celebration took place on Dec. 16 in a standing-room only dojo. During the two hour workout all ranks represented full commitment and mastery appropriate for their level. Domo arigato for your hard work and dedication throughout 2014. The Oct. tip test reviewed two candidates testing for their second green tip. Congratulations to our newest Ro-Kyu, Sandy Rodriguez and Janu Subramanan, for their persistence and determination since testing for their first green tip. Domo arigato to all the Black Belts and kyu ranks who came down to lend support, and to those instructors/deshi who have guided these white belts along since they joined many months ago.

Annual Black Belt Workout - Oct. 25 - 26

Black Belts from across the Country assembled at the IBM Center in Palisades, New York, for the annual weekend of workouts and year-end celebrations. The event was directed by Hanshi Robert Scaglione, and hosted by Kyoshi Dave Seeger of the Pine Forest Karate School. Photographs of the intense training may be viewed here.

911 Memorial Workout in Central Park - Sept. 14

Students from the Tri-state area met at a glade in the Northwest corner of Central Park to commemorate the heroism of New Yorkers during and after the tragedy of 911. Formal training began with an extended period of meditation, followed by warm-ups conducted by Ansumana Bangura. The ensuing three hours of basics and kata focused on exploring balance and foundation on the uneven terrain. As per tradition, students wore informal workout clothes and avoided loud kiais to reduce the risk of intimidating other New Yorkers enjoying the park. The casual attire also showed the public that martial artists come from all age groups and walks of life. As the date marked the anniversary of Grand Master Ansei Ueshiro’s arrival in the United States, we especially appreciated the large turnout of white belts. Towards the end of the workout students moved to separate areas to train in focus groups: Brown Belts to work Naihanchi kata in a natural stone amphitheater; Black Belts to a stand of elms for advanced kata training. The workout ended with demonstrations from all students.

August Full Belt Promotion - Aug. 10

The semi-annual Midtown belt promotion was held in the gym of the St. Bart’s Athletic Center on August 10. Formal testing got underway with a board of judges comprised of Sensei(s) Gamiel Ramson, Larry Link, Ellin Moore, Rob Neff and Mr. Frank Mowka of the Ueshiro Easton Karate Club. After a thorough review of all kata, yaku-soku kumite, bunkai and breaking, the following deshi were promoted in rank:

  • Sherin Bennitt - San Kyu

  • Anna Sweeney - Ni Kyu

  • Sam DiGiaro - Ni Kyu

  • Jermiah Emmenuel - Ik Kyu

Congratulations to all the candidates. Domo arigato to Sensei(s) Hend Elsayed, Ron Ballin, Mr. Dawood Emmenuel and Ms. Candace Morgan for leading the group in marathon training during the judges' deliberations. Thank you also to Ni-Kyu Muhammed Jalloh for conducting the warm-ups. The test concluded approximately 4-1/2 hours after it began with many lessons learned: utilize the mirror and video equipment to critique your kata; visit other dojo; kata is always a simulation of a life-and-death battle; honor those who came before us; continue to grow in body, mind and spirit while endeavoring to keep all three in balance. After the formal bow-out, each participant received a red 50th Anniversary Commemorative cap in appreciation of their "showing up."

Sherwood Is. Beach Workout - July 27

On Sunday, July 27, over 30 students from the Metropolitan area gathered at Sherwood Is. State Park for the annual Midtown Dojo beach workout. Training commenced under the direction of Kyoshi(s) Michael Mackay and Dave Seeger, supplemented by Sensei(s) Elliot Potter and Larry Link. Students trained through wind, rain, sun, sand, gravel and broken shells to cultivate warrior spirit. The concepts of foundation and using hip were addressed repeatedly. Students also experienced performing kata inside a "fox hole" dug into the beach the day before. Domo arigato to everyone’s spirit of camaraderie in offering travel assistance, hydration, first aid and moral support to their fellow deshi.

After the workout students adjourned to Sensei Adam Dunsby’s home in Easton for a BBQ pool party. The group shared many entertaining stories from the "old days" while savoring the simple joys of a summer afternoon. Domo arigato gozaimasu to the entire Dunsby family, as well as deshi Frank Mowka and Art Forne, for their generous hospitality all these years.

Children’s Summer Class - June - Aug. 2014

The Midtown Dojo offered two noon-time classes per week between June and August for children from the Islamic Society of Manhattan. The classes were taught by Sensei Bruce Silver, Sensei Ellin Moore, and Kyoshi Mackay, and emphasized the concept of mixing fun with hard work to achieve any goal. Domo arigato gozaimasu to both students and instructors for their patience and "Never give up" attitude.

June Tip Test

On Thursday, June 26, the Midtown Dojo conducted its mid-summer tip test. Two candidates were promoted based on their demonstrations of traditional Shorin-Ryu karate:

  • Keelin Robbins (Ro-kyu)

  • Sandy Rodriguez (Ro-kyu)

Domo arigato gozaimasu to the Board of Judges, Sensei(s) Larry Link and Luz DeLucia, Ms. Kim Garon and Mr. John Draghi, and to the other participants who came down for the workout and to offer moral support.

Hanshi’s Advanced Seminars in New York City - May 2014

In early May Hanshi Robert Scaglione came to Midtown Manhattan for two special classes. The first took place in the early evening of May 7 and was restricted to Black Belts. A much larger workout took place the following evening in the St. Barts gymnasium and was open to all ranks. Both events led to numerous high-level corrections from Hanshi, plus a great deal of sweat on the decks. The training on Thursday continued nearly until midnight, with Hanshi showing no sign of slowing down. Domo arigato gozaimasu to Hanshi for dedicating these invaluable blocks of time to help the deshi of Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu move forward in karate-do.

Katathon week celebrating Grand Master Ansei Ueshiro's Birthday - Apr. 22, 2014

During the last week of April the Midtown Dojo hosted numerous katathons and special events.

On Sunday, April 27, Sensei Hend El-Sayed organized a karate exhibition for nine children from the Islamic Society of Manhattan along with their parents. The demonstrations were led by Messrs. Jon Cohen and Ibrahima Jalloh, with assistance from Sensei John Robbins, his daughter Keely, Sensei Ron Ballin, Mr. Dawood Emmenuel, Muhammad Jalloh, Anso Bangura and Anna Sweeney. The demonstrations started with kihon across the deck followed by kata for each belt level. The group then performed pre-arranged fighting. After the formal demonstrations the nine guests attempted Fukyugata Ichi accompanied by the three children deshi, with Muhammad Jalloh leading the count.

On Tuesday, April 29, the Midtown Dojo held a green tip test in honor of Grand Master Ansei Ueshiro’s 81st birthday. The workout preceding the test consisted of marathon repetitions of all basics performed from jigotai-dachi. The formal test included the traditional Go-kyu and Ro-kyu requirements, followed by multiple demonstrations of Fukyugata Ichi and Ni by the green and brown belt students. The Board of Judges consisted of Sensei(s) Gamiel Ramson, Luz DeLucia, Hend Elsayed and Mr. Henri Waelbroeck. Sensei Ellin Moore presided over the deck while the judges deliberated. Comments from the Black Belts included: "Hit makiwara. Work on tight fist. Slow down. Gan concept." Based on their performances during the test and on their willingness to "Keep training," the following deshi were promoted:

  •  Janu Subramanan (Ro-kyu)

  •  Eric Baber (Go-kyu)

Congratulations to the many deshi and family supporters for making this milestone possible.

Domo arigato gozaimasu to the Board of Judges, Sensei Ramson, Moore, and Adams, for their consistency in showing up for the tip tests and for all the other ranks for lending their support.

Florida Winter training - Feb. 8 - 10, 2013

A small but select group of Black Belts travelled to Florida during the weekend of Feb. 8 through 10 to join Hanshi Robert Scaglione, Kyoshi Seeger, Mackay, Kaplan and Scaglione, and dozens of deshi who assembled for three days of advanced training. The seminars were sponsored by Hanshi, Sensei Tezel and Sensei Marchetti. Sensei Michael Margulis and John Bottega represented the Midtown Dojo. Hombu Dojo year-end compai - Dec. 20, 2012

The Midtown Dojo held its traditional year-end workout and compai on Dec. 20. Domo arigato gozaimasu to all the Midtown deshi, from the newest white belt through our newly-promoted Roku-Dan, for making this 50th Anniversary year the most memorable in the history of Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu. After the compai Sensei Larry Link presented the dojo with a hard-bound, over-sized book featuring photographs from some of the more spectacular moments over the prior years.

Commemorative carpet hung in dojo - Nov. 2012

A permanent tribute to Grand Master Ueshiro in the form of a hand-woven carpet was mounted in the dojo during Nov. Mr. Dawood Emmenuel ordered and hung the tapestry, which was hand-woven by artisans in Pakistan and presented to Hanshi as a token of appreciation from the Midtown Dojo. Hanshi donated the carpet to the Hombu dojo so it could be enjoyed by all. The carpet shows an American eagle and Chinese dragon circling the seal of Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu USA, with Master Ueshiro looking on. 50 pine trees adorn the border, which includes the signatures of Grand Master Ueshiro and Hanshi.

Workout with Kyoshi Sal Scaglione - Dec. 18, 2012

Kyoshi Sal Scaglione, Shihan of the East Meets West Karate Club of Northern Virginia, joined us on Dec. 18 for a special workout. Kyoshi Sal reviewed his Technique of the Week on yoku-soku kumite (pre-arranged fighting). Kyoshi provided numerous insight into this essential element of our training.

Tip test - Nov. 6, 2012

Due to unanticipated challenges posed by Superstorm Sandy, our Oct. tip test was delayed until Nov. 6. Congratulations to our two new Go-Kyu on achieving their first rank:

  • Nita Flores

Domo arigato gozaimasu to the Board of Judges, Sensei Gamiel Ramson, Ellin Moore and Luz DeLucia, and to the spirited group of supporters who came down to set the pace.

Domo arigato to those who made the long trip to Manhattan, to the New York area Black Belts who helped organize the event, and especially to Hanshi Robert Scaglione for his enduring leadership.  Highlights from the weekend's workouts may be seen here.

9/11 Memorial workout and test - Sept. 9, 2012

The Annual September 11 Memorial Workout was held on Sept. 9 in a secluded terrace of the Conservatory Gardens near 110th and Fifth Ave. The tranquil setting and limited use of audible kiai gave us the chance to focus on proper form and technique. Thank you to those who came early and stayed for the full five hour workout.

The Aug. promotions ran in parallel to the 911 Memorial Workout. After a review of kata, yakusoku kumite and breaking, the following advanced in rank:

  • Go-kyu: Anna Sweeney

  • Yon-kyu: Kathy Chin, Shailesh Singhal

  • San-kyu: Dhrubani Paul, Stephanie Toper, Jermiah Emmenuel, Matt Emmenuel

  • Ni-kyu: Ansumana Bangura (white stripe), Victoria Baughman

  • Ik-kyu: Muhammad Jalloh (white stripe), Art Forni (Easton Ct. Karate Club)

Photos of both the workout and test may be viewed here.

St. Bart's Summer Camp

For the second year in a row, Sensei Rob Neff and San-kyu Neil Nemoto offered traditional Shorin-Ryu classes to approximately 55 children enrolled in the "Summer at St. Barts" program. A final demonstration/workout was held on Aug. 22 in the gymnasium, attended by Sensei Rob Neff, Sensei Luz Delucia, Mr. David Emmenuel, Mr. Fellipe Flores, Michelle Napoli, Neil Nemoto, Shawn Nemoto and Arabella Neff.

50th Anniversary Celebration - Aug. 10 - 12, 2012

Karateka traveled from as far away as Hawaii, Israel and New Zealand to take part in a multitude of workouts and celebrations marking the 50th Anniversary of Shorin-Ryu in the USA under Grand Master Ansei Ueshiro. Below, a few highlights.

Kick-off Workout - Hanshi Robert Scaglione officially opened the celebrations on Friday afternoon, Aug. 10 with a class held inside a packed, slightly humid St. Barts gym. Hanshi went over the importance of breathing and the core elements of the traditional class. At the end of the workout he received the first 50th Anniversary Journal presented by the other members of the Editorial Board: Kyoshi Mackay, Sensei Ron Ballin and Mr. Jonathan Cohen.

Sho-dan Review - After a short dinner break, Hanshi, the Kyoshi and the Shihan returned to St. Barts for a Sho-dan test. Kyoshi Dave Seeger led the Ik-kyu through a brief review of kata inside the Hombu Dojo, and formal testing got underway in the main gym at approximately 9:00 pm. This part of the Sho-dan test focused on kata, and continued under Hanshi's supervision for three hours.

Early compai in Roslyn, Long Island - Saturday morning Black Belts from all the dojo met with Hanshi for an informal breakfast hosted by Sensei Boris Grossman at Matador Cigars, just a few miles from Master Ueshiro's final resting place in Locust Valley.

Full day seminars and reviews - Training resumed in earnest at the Metropolitan Ballroom of the DoubleTree Hotel, only a block away from the Hombu Dojo. Accommodations at the DoubleTree, including an Executive Suite for Hanshi and the Kyoshi, had been arranged by Sensei Richy Glassberg. At 10:00 am approximately 180 attendees filed into the workout space as Hanshi offered a meticulous review of the details in our kata. The students then joined in, filling the 7,000 square foot ballroom to perform the same kata and implement the corrections. (photos)

At 1:00 pm the group broke for lunch, walking in gi to Dag Hammarskjold Park across the street from the United Nations. The scene was reminiscent of the 30th Anniversary when the Black Belts of Shorin-Ryu USA met with Master Ueshiro at the UN. Box lunches were provided by Sensei Hend Elsayed.

After returning to the DoubleTree, the Ballroom was partitioned to allow private testing of candidates for Ni-Dan through Go-Dan. While Hanshi and the Kyoshi reviewed the Black Belts' higher kata, the kyu ranks continued training under the guidance of the senior Shihan.

At 3:00 pm the partitions were removed and all in attendance were able to observe the jyu kumite portion of the Sho-dan test. This was followed by atemi waza (brick breaking) for aspiring Sho-dan through Go-dan candidates. Hanshi concluded the workout with a tribute to Grand Master Ueshiro and the countless experiences that spanned their 35 year friendship.

Formal dinner at McCormick & Schmick's - Family and friends joined Hanshi and the karateka for a dinner where many words were offered in appreciation of Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu and the people who contribute to keeping Master Ueshiro's legacy alive.

Formal Commemorative Workout, USS Intrepid - Early Sunday morning found the streets of Manhattan occupied by deshi making their way to the Hudson River for the formal 50th Anniversary workout aboard the USS Intrepid. Hanshi paid tribute to Grand Master Ueshiro and to all military personnel around the world for their service to our Country. The workout was preceded by warm-ups where Hanshi reviewed the fine points of our basic techniques. After bowing in, training turned to perfecting Master Ueshiro's kata, Fukyugata San. The workout ended with formal demonstrations by each group of kyu and dan ranks, culminating with Hanshi leading the Kyoshi through Kusanku. (photos)

After the formal workout many students toured the Intrepid Museum with their families, while others adjourned for an informal brunch hosted by Sensei Chris Barnes.

Closing workout and ceremonies - All deshi convened back at the Hombu Dojo at 3:00 pm for a final workout. After extensive deliberations, Hanshi announced the results of the Dan-Level Review. The carpet was hand-knotted by artists in Pakistan, and produced by Mr. Dawood Emmenuel. Hanshi thanked all the students for their dedication and hard work, and reminded us that this is really just the beginning.
